The Big Bet Barometer: Grand National 2026
Analysing Payment Performance Under Pressure
The Big Bet Barometer is back! Our dedicated tracker reveals the true scale of the money in the moment. Providing the insider perspective on the lead up to the Grand National 2026, BR-DGE reports on the payment performance and betting behaviours across our sports betting merchants.
Final 60 minutes to post
During peak events like the Grand National, strong payments resilience is the difference between a winning customer experience and a lost opportunity. The final 10 minutes before the off saw a 45% increase in deposit volumes compared to 60 minutes before, as punters were eager to place their bets. In the last 15 minutes, we hit peak processing at 60 TPS.
Takeaways: Winning the Payments Race
Grand National day compressed a full day of payment activity into a short pre-race window, with £17.5m deposited across 727,000 transactions. The final minutes before the off saw a sharp rise in first-time depositor activity and a clear shift towards speed-first payment methods, with Apple Pay usage climbing to 31% as intent concentrated rapidly. BR-DGE’s Big Bet Barometer shows that when demand peaks and timing matters most, payment orchestration is what keeps transactions moving and ensures intent turns into revenue before the off.
High volume of first-time depositors
A higher increase in first-time depositors’ activity than expected, increasing 10x against a prediction of 7x. In the 30 minutes leading up to the main race, we saw an 11.5x increase in transaction volume compared to the same time the previous day. We also saw a 5.8x increase in peak TPS for first-time depositors vs the same time on the previous day.
Speed wins before the off
In the final 15 minutes before the Grand National, payment behaviour shifted noticeably towards speed-first methods. Apple Pay usage rose from 20–22% to 31% 15 minutes before the race, representing an 50% relative increase. Over the same window, card usage declined to 65%, representing a 15% relative decrease. 4% of transactions used alternative payment methods.
Withdrawal demand surged after the race
Payout activity increased sharply around the Grand National, with withdrawal volumes rising by 120% and total payout value up 60% compared with the previous week. Deposits dominate the build-up, but withdrawals accelerate immediately afterwards. For operators, this highlights an often-overlooked pressure point.
Consistent conversion
Maintaining a consistent conversion rate across 727k transactions on Grand National day is what real performance looks like. Any friction in these peak windows turns intent into revenue that does not come back.
